How to Outrun a Crocodile When Your Shoes Are Untied by Jess Keating

What an awesome book this turned out to be! It is a current Georgia Book Award nominee and happens to be serious, funny, and focus on so many life lessons that it is a book not to be missed. I can't wait to discuss it with the 5th grade girls book club on Monday, March 14th! You won't want to miss this one! I rarely laugh out loud when reading a book but with this one, I couldn't resist.

Loot by Jude Watson

Product Details
Although a mature topic, Upside Down in the Middle of Nowhere by Julie T. Lamana was an interesting look into life during and after Hurricane Katrina. Now that we have read two Georgia Book Award nominees, we will be reading one more in order to be eligible to vote. Our next book is Loot by Jude Watson. Some of the book club boys read it earlier this year and absolutely loved it. One student described it as an Ocean Eleven for kids. Perfect description if you ask me. We will meet on Monday, February 8th to discuss Loot. Who knows...we may even discover some loot of our own!

Upside Down in the Middle of Nowhere

Our Art to Book Club is one of the highlights of my day every month! We made such fabulous book art inspired by Prairie Evers. It is now on display in our Book to Art Club Museum in our lower school media center. We hope you will come check it out!

As we continue to read more Georgia book award nominees in order to be eligible to vote by late January, we have chosen Upside Down in the Middle of Nowhere by Julie T. Lamana for our next book club book.

From the moment we started reading about this book, which is a moving story about Hurricane Katrina, we knew we had to read it next! We can't wait to discuss it on Monday, January 4th after our holiday break!

May Book Club

The 5th grade girls always have a lively meeting when we get together!  This month's meeting was no exception as we talked about When You Reach Me, which is an interesting book in that it doesn't fit exactly into one genre of literature.  Most of our book club members really liked the book, although there was some confusion regarding certain events in the story.  For our next (and last!) book club meeting, we will be reading The One and Only Ivan.  This is a fiction story based on the true account of Ivan, a gorilla who lived much of his life in a cage at a shopping center.  I am sure that, once again, the girls will be animated in their opinions!  We will meet Monday, May 18th during lunchtime.  Happy Reading!
